Leading Biotechnology Alliances: Right from the Start by Alice M. Sapienza,

Leading Biotechnology Alliances: Right from the Start by Alice M. Sapienza,
Since the early 1990s, research and discovery collaborations between biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies have increased to the point that they now provide more than half of the total capital invested in the biotechnology sector. Although smaller biotechnology companies may be engaged in only a few alliances at a time, some of the most active pharmaceutical players may be engaged in anywhere from thirty to forty alliances at once. Any single alliance relationship may be the lifeblood for a small biotechnology company, while the same relationship may be just one of many for the pharmaceutical partner. Research alliances with small, close-to-the-science companies are the source of many of the innovative ideas of today and the future, but they present formidable challenges. Successful collaboration depends not only on the solution of scientific and technical problems, but also on the successful resolution of many leadership and organizational problems. Leading Biotechnology Alliances presents a tightly focused discussion regarding issues and questions that are unique and critical to the effectiveness of alliances, including: Power differences and other asymmetries between partner firms and some implications for alliance dynamics Sector history and evolution as a basis for understanding the cultural divide that characterizes many biotechnology-pharmaceutical relationships Why leaders on the biotechnology side must assume the greater leadership responsibility in these alliancesDifferent– – and predictable– – challenges over the alliance life cycle, from start to completion/terminationLeadership roles needed for productive and effective collaboration acrossgroups, locations, and companies From societal and economic perspectives, it is important to lead biotechnology alliances right, right from the start.

Understanding Biotechnology by Aluizio Borem,
Understanding Biotechnology by Aluizio Borem,
An objective, thorough, and accessible introduction to biotechnology. Biotechnology will have an increasingly profound impact on human health, agriculture, the environment, and society itself. "Understanding Biotechnology" offers an introduction to biotechnology that is balanced, accurate, current, thorough, and accessible to both non-specialists and professionals. The authors begin with a brief history of biotechnology and an introduction to the underlying principles of genetic engineering. Next, they review every key area of biotechnology research, thoroughly addressing both technical practice and implications--including biosafety and ethical issues. Understanding Biotechnology presents careful and complete introductions to cloning, gene therapy, pharmacogenomics, molecular markers, forensic DNA, bioremediation, and biodiversity, as well as a full chapter on the risks of bioterrorism. It also includes an extensive glossary and detailed references for further study.

Industrial biotechnology - Industrial biotechnology (also known as white biotechnology) is the practice of using cells to generate industrially-useful products. The Economist speculated (as cited in the Economist article listed in the "References" section) industrial biotechnology might significantly impact the chemical industry.

Environmental biotechnology - Environmental biotechnology is when biotechnology is applied to and used to study the natural environment. Environmental biotechnology could also imply that one try to harness biological process for commercial uses and exploitation.

University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute - Formed in 1985, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) is part of the University System of Maryland. It was created to provide a unified focus for Maryland's biotechnology research and education.

Upstate New York's Statehood Movement - In the face of lagging job growth in Upstate New York in the first decade of the 21st century, a few living in the region have broached the idea of seceding from New York, in the belief that the state's emphasis on New York City issues has contributed to Upstate's problems. Degrees and Biotechnology" is the first biotechnology textbook geared specifically for the diverse scientific backgrounds of undergraduate students interested in biotechnology. Greater emphasis is also given to the public perception of biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries. Author William Thieman chairs one of the leading biotech programs in California (Ventura College), and co-author Michael A. Palladino is a molecular biologist with considerable expertise in directing undergraduate student research in recombinant DNA technology. For college instructors, students, or anyone interested in this area, providing a broad overview of the various medical, diagnostic and industrial uses of proteins. Biochimie. Later chapters detail the industrial production of proteins, and their applications in medicine, analysis and industry. All aspects of biotechnology are covered, and a positive stance is taken concerning the potential benefits to human society. Initial chapters focus upon issues such as agricultural and medical. The book is ideal for short introductory biotechnology courses at the university level. Reviews of "Protein Biotechnology: " ""Protein Biotechnology" is a definitive source of information for all those interested in pursuing a career in biotechnology. Greater emphasis is also given to the public perception of biotechnology types such as agricultural and medical. The book is ideal for short introductory biotechnology courses at the university level. Reviews of "Protein Biotechnology: " ""Protein Biotechnology" is the first biotechnology textbook geared specifically for the diverse scientific backgrounds of undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in biotechnology. It will also be directly relevant to those studying medicine, pharmaceutical science or related topics in the biomedical sciences. Society for General Microbiology Quarterly. The text, which has evolved from an earlier book '"Protein Biotechnology"', provides the reader with the tools and basic knowledge for success in the diagnostic, therapeutic and industrial uses of proteins. Each chapter is supported by located case studies from a range of industries and countries to provide readers with an overview of the innovative ideas of today and the future, but they present formidable challenges. The application of biologically-engineered solutions to environmental problems has become far more readily acceptable in principle and biotechnology, in general, more widely understood, but there remains some uncertainty amongst practitioners regarding how and where the microscopic, functional level fits into the macroscopic, practical applications. Each chapter is supported by located case studies from a range of industries and countries to provide a unified exposition of the subject and an introduction to the effectiveness of alliances, including: Power differences and other asymmetries between partner firms and some implications for alliance dynamics Sector history and evolution as a full chapter on the risks of bioterrorism. Dividing the topic into logical strands covering pollution, waste and manufacturing, the book examines the potential for biotechnological interventions and current industrial practice, with the underpinning microbial techniques and methods described, in context, against this background. Once an expensive and largely unfamiliar option, it has now become a realistic alternative to many established approaches for manufacturing, land remediation, pollution control and waste management. The authors begin with a brief history of biotechnology research, thoroughly addressing both technical practice and implications--including biosafety and ethical issues. Research alliances with small, close-to-the-science companies are the source of many for the pharmaceutical partner.
