As birth, illness, and death increasingly come under technological control, struggles arise over who should control the body and define its limits and capacities. Biotechnologies turn the traditional "facts of life" into matters of expert judgment and partisan debate. We use and imagine the body in radically different ways, and from these emerge new collective discourses of morality and personal identity.

Genetic engineering -- the science of creating living things out of living materials -- is growing and expanding at a dizzying pace, driven by the scientific community's dreams of "improving" on nature and corporate America's dreams of profit. Right now, for example, some experts estimate that 40 to 60 percent of all U.S. plantings are from genetically modified seed. Most surprising of all, this biotechnology explosion has happened, in the United States at least, with scarcely a media voice raised to question it. But the honeymoon is coming to a close; the number of critics is growing, and the criticism is growing louder. This eye-opening collection of essays brings together the viewpoints of an impressive group of people who speak with localist knowledge and perspective across the fields of science, literature, theology, ecology, and activism. Contributors include author Wendell Berry, biologists Richard Strohman and Stuart Newman, and environmental activist Chris Desser -- all of whom are concerned about how biotechnology research and development will affect the delicate balance and diversity of life on earth. As we release more and more genetically altered plants and animals into the environment, what will be the results? Can we even predict them?
